This is translated from the second chapter of the book “Al-Umdat Fi Iudaad al-Uddath” of Sheikh Abdul Qadir bin Abdul Aziz (May Allah have mercy on him)

Chapter two: Ruling on Military training for Muslims

Firstly: Importance of military training for Muslims

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

«يُوشِكُ أَنْ تَدَاعَى عَلَيْكُمُ الأُمَمُ مِنْ كُلِّ أُفُقٍ كَمَا تَدَاعَى الأَكَلَةُ عَلَى قَصْعَتِهَا» قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمِنْ قِلَّةٍ بِنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ:«أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ كَثِيرٌ وَلَكِنَّكُمْ غُثَاءٌ كَغُثَاءِ السَّيْلِ تُنزعُ الْمَهَابَةَ مِنْ قُلُوبِ عَدُوِّكُمْ وَيُجْعَل فِي قُلُوبِكُمُ الْوَهْنَ» قَالُوا وَمَا الْوَهَنُ؟ قَالَ: «حُبُّ الْحَيَاةِ وَكَرَاهِيَةُ الْمَوْتِ»

The people will soon summon one another to attack you from every horizon as people when eating invite others to share their dish. We asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and last wahn (enervation) into your hearts. They asked: What is wahn (enervation). Messenger of Allah replied: Love of life and dislike of death.[1]

And the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

«إِذَا تَبَايَعْتُمْ بِالْعِينَةِ وَأَخَذْتُمْ أَذْنَابَ الْبَقَرِ وَرَضِيتُمْ بِالزَّرْعِ وَتَرَكْتُمُ الْجِهَادَ سَلَّطَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ ذُلاًّ لا يَنْزِعُهُ حَتَّى تَرْجِعُوا إِلَى دِينِكُمْ»

When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad. Allah will make humiliation prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your religion.[2]

Both the Hadiths have the same meaning and they are without doubt the describing of the condition of the Muslims in this age in their love of the world and dislike of death and abandonment of Jihad. Hence, Allah made the disbelieving nations prevail over them subjecting them to humiliation and disgrace. And without any doubt, this is a punishment from Allah for abandoning Jihad as Allah the Exalted and Highest said:

{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمْ انفِرُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ اثَّاقَلْتُمْ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ أَرَضِيتُمْ بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا مِنْ الْآخِرَةِ فَمَا مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ إِلَّا تَنفِرُوا يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَيْئًا وَاللَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ}

O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that when you are asked to march forth in the Cause of Allah (i.e. Jihad) you cling heavily to the earth? Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But little is the enjoyment of the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter. If you march not forth, He will punish you with a painful torment and will replace you by another people, and you cannot harm Him at all, and Allah is Able to do all things.”[3]

The painful torment mentioned in the Ayah contains within it the Humiliation which was mentioned in the Hadith of Ibn Umar, and the summoning of the nations against us which was mentioned in the Hadith of Thawban. The Salvation from this is as the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) informed us in his saying “will not withdraw it until you return to your religion.” And this[4] is achieved by returning to Jihad which was mentioned in the first parts of the Hadith. [5] And this is in agreement with the words of Allah the Most High:

{وَقَاتِلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ كَافَّةً كَمَا يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ كَافَّةً وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُتَّقِينَ}

And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].”[6]

And also these words of Allah:

{وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّى لا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلَّهِ}.

And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah.”[7] [8]

Without a doubt, with this Divine commandment, rises a question. Which is “How do we implement this commandment while we the Muslims have become so weak divided and in fitan to an extent which would even leave the patient one bewildered?”

We answer with the words of Ibn Thaymiyya: “It is obligatory to be prepared for Jihad by making ready strength and steeds of war in the times of declining (of Jihad) due to incapability. For verily, anything due to its absence a Wajib is not established, is itself a Wajib.”[9]

The Preparation for Jihad is divided to two parts:

1)      The Preparation of Iman by the Shar’ee Knowledge and purification of the self.

Allah said:

{يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمْ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ}

reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom”[10]

2)      The Materialistic Preparation which is by preparing strength, training upon it and spending in the cause of Allah.

We will postpone the discussion about the preparation of Iman and begin with the framework for the materialistic preparation for Jihad as that is the reason for the compilation of this treatise. Therefore we say, verily Allah commanded us with it in his words:

{وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ وَمِنْ رِبَاطِ الْخَيْلِ تُرْهِبُونَ بِهِ عَدُوَّ اللَّهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ وَآخَرِينَ مِنْ دُونِهِمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَهُمْ اللَّهُ يَعْلَمُهُمْ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِنْ شَيْءٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُم وَأَنْتُمْ لا تُظْلَمُونَ}

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah[11] will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.”[12]

And the Hadith of Uqba bin Aamir was narrated in the Tafsir of that Ayah. He (Uqba bin Aamir) said: I heard the Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) upon the Minbar saying:

«{وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ}، ألا إن القوة الرمي، ألا إن القوة الرمي، ألا إن القوة الرمي».

“ ‘And prepare against them whatever you are able of power’ Verily power is in shooting. Verily power is in shooting. Verily power is in shooting. [13]

And this Tafsir of the Ayah from the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is a (Decisive) text on the topic of dispute between the one who says that the preparation for Jihad composes of training weaponry usage and the one who says that the preparation for Jihad composes of Tarbiya and Tazkiya (Education and Purification). Therefore, indeed this Hadith makes clear that the preparation Allah ordered is the materialistic preparation from various shooting weapons and training its usage. And there is no room for a Muslim to abandon this (form of preparation), as we will mention in the chapter “Ruling on Training”.

As for the Tarbiya and Tazkiya (Education and Purification), then it is included in the Preparation of Iman for Jihad which is also Wajib and we shall mention the evidence for it later on.

The Training camps and the fields of Jihad if they are well managed, makes up a good sphere for Tarbiya of men and revealing their hidden talents and behavior due to the long exposure to hardships and travel.

And we shall talk about the preparation of Iman in more than one place throughout this treatise if Allah wills and there is no disagreement about the necessity of the preparation of Iman alongside the preparation of strength. But as for the restricting of the preparation mentioned in the Ayah to preparation of Iman alone, or considering the preparation of Iman as an excuse to sit back from materialistic preparation and training, then this is what is rejected from the text of the Quran and the Hadith. Hence we cannot agree with that.

In Summary, the importance of military training arises due to it being one of the ways of training for Jihad And Jihad is the path for salvation for Muslims from the anger of the Lord, the Most Exalted and the Most High, and the path of salvation from the life of humiliation and disgrace which we now live in.

  1. Alsalaamu alaikum,

    Heard a lot of him (may Allah protect him), even read his biography on a website but I didn’t find in that any info regarding his background in Islamic sciences. So, wanted to know, who did he study under?

      So far I have not found any name of his teachers.
      His name itself was kept secret in the early days.

      But he has the praise of many scholars including Sheikh Abu Muhammad al Maqdisi and was widely accepted as a scholar in the Jihadi groups.
